At-one-ment: to be made one again. One with what? With who? With God.
This implies that before atonement, before at-one-ment, there was at-two-ment,
separation, apart from God, estranged, a foreigner.
Ephesians 2:12 That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world
Isaiah 59:2 your iniquities have separated between you and your God
What’s the problem here? Sin, iniquity, separation.
What’s the solution? Atonement, reconciliation, restoration.
But sin is not a simple problem. It is an all pervading contamination.
Isaiah 1:5,6 the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head [the whole body!] there is no soundness in it;
but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up,
neither mollified with ointment.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:
Romans 7:13 sin, working death in me
Romans 14,15 I am carnal, sold under sin.
Romans 7:25 with the mind I myself serve the law of God;
but with the flesh [I serve] the law of sin.
Romans 7:15 for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
Romans 7:18 for to will is present with me; but to perform that which is good I find not.
Romans 7:19 the evil which I would not, that I do.
Romans 7:20 it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.
Romans 7:23 there is another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind,
and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin
Romans 7:24 who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Answer? The Atonement of Jesus. That brings us to Chapter 8.
Romans 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus
hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
The Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus is the solution to the sin problem!
Then why didn’t God just give Adam and Eve this Spirit of Life as soon as they sinned and spare the world 4000 years of pain and suffering, misery and death?
Joshua 4:24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
2Chron 32:31 God left him, to try him, that he might know all [that was] in his heart.
Psalm 78:5-7 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: (6) That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: (7) That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.
Not only Adam and Eve, not only the children of Israel, but generations to come, and even the angels of heaven might set their hope in God.
1Cor 4:9 we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
Rom 8:3 God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.
In whose flesh? In the flesh of his own Son.
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
When Jesus died on the cross, our sins died with him...we are dead to sins...the sinful flesh is dead!
“the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death”
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit...the spirit of life in Jesus...the spirit of life that “learned obedience” “in the days of his flesh” (Heb 5:8), the fullness of the spirit (seven spirits) that Jesus “has” Rev 3:1, the seven eyes of the Lamb (Rev 5:6) that are combined with the seven horns (all power, omnipotence).
The Spirit of Jesus “has made me free” from the law of sin and death.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:36
Who was it that died for our sins, and with our sins in his body on the tree?
It was “the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” Gal 2:20
Some “crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh” Heb 6:6
But it was the Son of God who was manifested.
1John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
that he might destroy the works of the devil.
He destroyed the law of sin and death by dying with “our sins in his own body on the tree”
1John 5:5-6 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
(6) This is he that came by water and blood, [even] Jesus Christ;
not by water only, but by water and blood.
Water and blood came forth from the side of Jesus when he was pierced. John 19:34
Water is a symbol of the Spirit; blood is the life of the flesh (Lev 17:11)
“not by water only” - not just a spiritual death,
but he came in the flesh and died a real physical death.
“He died the death that was ours that we might have the life that is his” God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. 1John 5:11
God has given to His Son that he might have life in himself. John 5:26
Thus God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself,
bringing us back to the Father, through the Son, that we might be one with Him again.
Grace and peace be unto you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love. 2 John 3
