Noah's Flood

Noah's Flood

“The world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.” 2 Peter 3:6

This Hollywood version, described as a “fantasy drama,” paints a grossly distorted version of the Biblical account. Noah is assisted by six-armed fallen angels called “the Watchers” in building the ark. His sons need wives, so Noah goes looking for some but gets angry at the behavior of humans and decides that all humans should die. Ham goes searching for a wife and finds a girl who gets caught in an animal trap and so he has to leave her because it started raining. Methuselah decides to not get in the ark and he’s swept away in the rising waters. The Watchers hold off the angry mobs trying to get on the ark, sacrificing themselves which allows them to be accepted back into heaven. Tubal-Cain manages to get into the ark and solicits Ham. Shem’s wife is ready to give birth and Noah decides that all humanity must go extinct, so he vows that if the baby is a girl he will kill it. Shem and his wife build a raft to escape, Noah finds it and burns it. Shem’s wife goes into labor and delivers twin girls. Tubal-Cain shows up and tries to throw Noah overboard. Ham stabs him in the back. Noah then goes looking for the babies so he can kill them, but just as he is about to plunge the knife, he softens and his heart melts with love for them. What imagination!

Ari Handel, the scriptwriter, said the story begins with a strong concept of justice, but in the end there is a rainbow, and God says, “Even though the heart of man is filled with wickedness, I will never again destroy the world. God somehow goes from this idea of judging the wickedness to mercy and grace.”

One Critic: “promotes the Luciferian Gnostic belief that the Creator of this world is evil."
Others: inclusion of "God, creation, providence, sin, obedience, salvation: not bad for a major Hollywood movie!"

Noah knew. His father, Lamech, knew. His grandfather, Metheselah, knew. His greatgrandfather, Enoch, definitely knew. Noah came from a long line of those who knew the one true God. In fact, all who lived from the very beginning, starting with Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, they ALL knew God. We can read that in Romans 1:19

“BECAUSE that which may be know of God is them; for God has showed it to them."

Who’s the THEM? Verse 18:, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.

Now verse 20: For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and divinity (ASV); so that they are without excuse: Verse 21: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imagination, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man.

Now only is man corruptible, but so is everything that is in the earth. And that’s just what happened.

Gen 6:11-12 The earth also was corrupt [H7843] before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; [H7843] for all flesh had corrupted [H7843] his way upon the earth.

Today we have caught up with them: internet gives us 24/7 access to wickedness. The earth is once again corrupted and filled with violence—not just human violence, but geophysical violence: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis.

The Hebrew word translated here as “corrupt” is shachath. Strong’s H7843: A primitive root; to decay, that is, (causatively) ruin (literally or figuratively): - batter, cast off, corrupt (-er, thing), destroy (-er, -uction), lose, mar, perish, spill, spoiler, X utterly, waste (-r).

Thus, in reality, “The earth also was destroyed, ruined, wasted, perished before God...for all flesh had destroyed, ruined, wasted, perished his way upon the earth.”

How does man become corrupt?
Deut 4:15 Moses reminded Israel that they “saw no manner of similitude” of God when He spoke to them at mount Sinai. Verse 16: “Lest you corrupt yourselves and make a graven image, the similitude of any figure, likeness, male or female, beast or winged fowl, on the ground or in the waters, or worship the sun, moon, and stars.

That’s what happened with Egypt. They made gods of frogs, flies, cows, even the Nile river.
Psalm 53:1 The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they.
That’s what Pharaoh said: Who is Jehovah? I know not Yahweh! Pharaoh was corrupted.
Exodus 8:24 There came a grievous swarm of flies into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted...
The people were corrupted in worshiping idols, then the land was corrupted.

Leviticus 18 contains a detailed list of abominations that were “the doings of the land of Egypt” and “the doings of the land of Canaan.” Both the Egyptians and Sodomites practiced:

Lev 18:6-18 incest and pedophilia.
Lev 18:19 marital relations during a woman’s period
Lev 18:21 passing children through the fire
Lev 18:22 homosexuality
Lev 18:23,24 sodomy, bestiality

The results?
Lev 18:25 the land is defiled, therefore I visit the iniquity thereof upon it. and the land itself will vomit out the inhabitants thereof

And because of that the whole land of Egypt was corrupted, ruined, wasted, destroyed. It could have all been prevented. Egypt did not have to be destroyed with all the plagues. Neither did the antediluvian world need to perish with the flood.

“If the people who lived before the flood had been obedient to the word of God, they would have been preserved, and would not have perished by the waters of the flood.” RH August 18, 1874

God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man...” Gen 6:5,6

Did God finally realize He had made a mistake? an oops? No, an enemy has done this. God’s heart ached for what had happened.

The word “repented” in this text comes from the Hebrew word nacham Strongs #5162 with the primary meaning of “to be sorry, to comfort, to console” and is translated 56 times as comfort (30), comforted (18), comforter (2), comforters (4), comforts (2), 10 times as have compassion (2), moved to pity (1), sorry (6), am sorry (1), 6 times as console (3), consolers (1), consoling (1), be a consolation (1). 11 times as change mind (6) , change minds (1), changed mind (4). Additional renderings: relieved (1), appeased (1), give rest (1), regret (1), regretted (1), relent (5), relented (4), relenting (3), relents (1), repent (3), repented (2), think better (1), when the time of mourning was ended (2).

This describes God’s feeling of sorrow for man’s corruption and sinful state, His pity for the victims of violence, His longing to comfort those who suffer.

After noting the corruption of both the earth and all flesh upon it in verse 12, God says, “The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them” (Gen 6:13). God gives the reason that all flesh is coming before Him, (that is, their extinction is inevitable), because the earth is filled with violence. Their violence is going to bring about their own demise.

Man was made from the earth; man returns to the earth at death. There is a close connection, a physical link, between man’s behavior and the earth’s behavior. Man’s violence affects the earth to be violent, reflecting back the nature of man. God could see that the end of the earth was approaching because man’s corruption was complete.

Isaiah 24:4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty (proud) people of the earth do languish.
verse 5: The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
verse 6: Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate:

How does the curse devour the earth?
Men transgress the laws, change the ordinance into appeasing the gods of their own making.

Proverbs 26:2 “The curse causeless shall not come.”
Every curse has a cause. Cause and Effect. Look at the original curse:
Genesis 3:17 Because you sinned, cursed is the ground for your sake.
The ground will serve as an indicator of man’s rebellion and perversion, to teach us a lesson that we might learn why the curse came...there is a cause!

Most people believe that God just destroyed all the antediluvians.
Most people believe that God will destroy all the wicked in the end.
Jesus said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it also be in the days of the Son of man” Luke 17:26.
Or as in Matthew 24:37, “As the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
That’s why Revelation 11:18 declares the time has come “to destroy them which destroy the dearth.”
When men destroy (corrupt) the earth, the earth will respond with destructive force.
The “days of Noah” is a template for the last days. We also must enter the ark of safety.

What was the ark’s purpose?
Gen 6:14 “make an ark of gopher wood.” Hebrew #1613: “pitch” resinous trees: pine, cypress, cedar. Same Hebrew word as Gen 19:24 #1614: The Lord reined upon Sodom and Gomorrah gophrit, pitch.

The same pitch can be a water repellent or a combustible fuel. It can protect or it can destroy.
The Ark which is providing safety for the righteous, is brimstone on the wicked.
The ark is, in effect, made of "brimstone."

Isaiah 30:33 The breath of the Lord is like a stream of brimstone (gophrit)
The breath of the Lord is an ark of safety to the righteous; but brimstone to the wicked.
Jesus breathed upon his disciples the “brimstone” of his spirit. John 20:23
John the Baptist said that Jesus would baptize with fire and with the holy spirit.
On the day of Pentecost the fire came: tongues of fire upon the heads of those ready to receive it.

“Pitch (Hebrew kaphar, cover) it within and without.”
This is a different Hebrew word: covering, to wipe clean, atonement, protection.

We must understand the atonement and where the Spirit of God comes from.
Resin is the “blood” of the tree, a redemption price, to hold the ark together that saves the saints, and protects them from the earth spewing out its violence.

George Fifield wrote about the atonement in 1897 and now 120 years later, 2017, we are rediscovering it.

Atonement is made by God revealing His love, to remove man’s misunderstanding of God.
To cover (kaphar) over the lies Satan has made about God so we will gladly return to our Father.
To discover that even the Father Himself loves us (John 16:27).
To find that Sabbath is the fountain of blessing in which our Father comes to us, to restore us to Himself.
To rest in the bosom of the Father, and be accepted in His beloved Son (Eph 1:6).
Now after 120 years, the ark has been built. Will you come into it?
We must have the faith of Jesus, the righteousness of Jesus, the mind of Jesus.

At this point there are several possible explanations to what follows in the flood narrative:
1. God could use violence Himself to end violence in the earth, or
2. knowing that violence is coming, God does what He can to save as many as possible.

Job offers a valuable insight into the conditions that prevailed “in the days of Noah.”
Job 21:14 The wicked “say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.”
Hosea 4:6 observes that “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
They are “a people of no understanding.” Isa 27:11
“They did not like to retain God in their knowledge” Romans 1:28
Job 22:15 wonders, Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
Job 22:16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
Job 22:17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

God could do nothing more for them. They were determined to live without Him. Job’s wording here of “the old way” of “wicked men” “whose foundation was overflown with a flood” is very similar to that which Peter used in 1Peter 3:6: “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.”

When God departed, there was no longer His sustaining power to maintain the stability of planetary orbits, solar intensity, and atmospheric temperatures, dew points, to name just a few of the many physical parameters required to ensure the preservation of life on this planet. Romans 1:18-28 describes how “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.” Three times Paul states that “God gave them up” and “God gave them over to a reprobate mind to do those things” (verses 24,26,28). This is how God describes His wrath: leaving the sinner to the consequences of his own choice.

God’s ways are truly not our ways. Man displays his wrath by coming toward the object of his anger with all the power he can muster to inflict as much pain and damage as possible; God displays his wrath by turning away, departing, leaving those who scorn, reject, malign, or blaspheme Him.

Another example of God’s wrath in turning away is demonstrated by the hiding of His face. “Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.” (Deuteronomy 31:17-18)

First, His children turn away from Him “unto other gods.”
Then, God sadly hides His face, turns away from them, gives them over to the choice they have made, gives them up and at last forsakes them.

Again in Isaiah this same principle is stated as an example of Noah’s flood:
“For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me” (Isa 54:7-9)

Jehovah turned and hid His face and the earth was forsaken, just as Jesus experienced on the cross. As he took the sins of the world upon himself, he was separated from his Father, a separation that brought intense agony and mortal grief—the sense of being forsaken by his own Father.

There are two ways in which God could cause the flood:

1. Use His Divine Power to Actively Produce the Deluge

Evidence for this is offered in the following verses:
And God said unto Noah... behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Genesis 6:13
I will cause it to rain upon the earth. Genesis 7:4
Neither will I again smite anymore everything living, as I have done. Genesis 8:21

“The hand of omnipotence is at no loss for ways and means to accomplish his purposes. He could reach into the bowels of the earth and call forth his weapons, waters there concealed, to aid in the destruction of the corrupt inhabitants of the old world. But let us all bear in mind that those who perished in that awful judgment had an offer of escape.” ST Jan 3, 1878.8

This is understood by many that:
1. The power of God, which is above the laws of nature, is what caused the flood.
2. According to the laws of nature, it was impossible for nature to cause a flood by itself without "the hand of omnipotence" reaching "into the bowels of the earth and call forth his weapons".
3. It was God who destroyed the earth by a flood, not human power, not Satan's power, not nature’s power. It was "supernatural" and was only by “the hand of omnipotence.”

This use of “reach” here is in the same sense as one would “reach into your heart”. The reason this is so is reflected by what else He does: “call forth” not to grasp or grip with a physical fist, but to direct and access His resources in the natural world with His voice and with the laws of nature which He has already established. The “hand of omnipotence” is in this setting a euphemism for His total control over creation by His word and His will.

“God’s love is represented in our day as being of such a character as would forbid His destroying the sinner. Men reason from their own low standard of right and justice.... The plea may be made that a loving Father would not see His children suffering the punishment of God by fire while He had the power to relieve them. But God would, for the good of His subjects and for their safety, punish the transgressor. God does not work on the plan of man. He can do infinite justice that man has no right to do before his fellow man. Noah would have displeased God to have drowned one of the scoffers and mockers that harassed him, but God drowned the vast world. Lot would have had no right to inflict punishment on his sons-in-law, but God would do it in strict justice. Who will say God will not do what He says He will do?”— Ellen White Manuscript Releases 12:207-209;

And what will God do?

2. Withdraw His Divine Power Preventing the Deluge

“It is God that shields His creatures and hedges them in from the power of the destroyer. But the Christian world have shown contempt for the law of Jehovah, and the Lord will do just what He has declared that He would—He will withdraw His blessings from the earth and remove His protecting care from those who are rebelling against His law and teaching and forcing others to do the same.” Great Controversy p. 589.2

“Because they rejected the warning, the Spirit of God was withdrawn from the sinful race, and they perished in the waters of the Flood.” Great Controversy p. 431.1

Sinners will be destroyed and by God’s power—for all power is of God. “there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God” (Romans 13:1)—but it will be by the sinner’s decision, not God’s. Our Father is reluctant to see this happen, thus He is long-suffering with the rejecters of His grace. But when He is told to depart, He sadly leaves, knowing what will happen when He is removed from His position as Sustainer and Upholder of all things.

Heb 1:3 upholding all things by the word of his power.
Psa 33:6-7 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as an heap: he lays up the depth in storehouses.

This is a direct reference to Genesis 1:9,
“And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place.”

It was the voice of Christ that gathered the waters together on day two of creation week; and when His voice was silenced by the demand of the antediluvians, His power to hold the waters above divided from the waters beneath was also removed, for “by him all things consist” Col 1:17—they hold together. Creation no longer heard the voice of their Master calling to them, “Peace be still,” stay where you are.

“Among the cliffs and rocks of Patmos, John held communion with his Maker... All around him the apostle beheld witnesses to the Flood that had deluged the earth because the inhabitants ventured to transgress the law of God.” Acts of the Apostles p. 571, 572.

Satan had caused the people to reject the Son of God and His Spirit, the power that sustained all nature. It was the enemy of God who was ultimately responsible. The same response occurred at the cross.
Notice how Psalm 18 parallels both the flood and Calvary.

Psa 18:4-5 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. Gen 7:11 all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God

Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Psa 18:7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken

Matt 27:51 the earth did quake, and the rocks rent

Psa 18:11 He made darkness his secret place ...round about him were dark waters and thick clouds

Matt 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

Speaking of a future destruction of the earth alludes to its previous destruction by flood:
“for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.” Isa 24:18

Source of the Flood Waters

Genesis 1:2
darkness was upon the face of the deep (surface of the waters)
Verse 7: God...divided the waters which were under the firmament
from the waters which were above the firmament
Verse 9: Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place
Verse 10: the gathering together of the waters called he Seas

Psalm 148:4
Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

This passage has been taken as evidence that even after the flood there were still extra-terrestrial waters. Others note that water is called to praise and would be symbolic of heavenly creatures, even as waters represent multitudes of people in apocalyptic literature (Rev 17:15).

Then 1565 years later in Genesis 7:11
all the fountains of the great deep are broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

The waters above fell as rain (for 40 days) and returned to the waters below together with the fountains of the deep which may well have contributed the major flood volume.

How much water? Presently there are 1,332 cubic kilometers of water in the oceans.
This equals 3.52x1020 , or 352 quintillion gallons.
But the mean global content of water vapor in the atmosphere is roughly sufficient to only cover the surface of the planet with a layer of liquid water about 25 mm deep weighing 1.27×1016 kg
And since the mean annual precipitation for the planet is only about 1 meter, it implies a rapid turnover of water in the air – on average, the residence time of a water molecule in the troposphere is only about 9 to 10 days.

From top to bottom the earth’s atmosphere is organized in the following layers:
Exosphere: 700 to 10,000 km (440-6,200 miles)

Thermosphere: 80 to 700 km (50-440 miles) temp up to 1500ºC, cloudless, no water vapor

Mesosphere: 50 to 80 km (31-50 miles) temp drops with altitude to -85ºC Polar-mesospheric noctilucent clouds form here
Stratosphere: 12 to 50 km (7-31 miles) temp -60ºC at base to 0ºC near Mesosphere. Polar-stratospheric nacreous clouds form here
Troposphere: 0 to 12 km (0-7 miles) heated by surface radiation, weather systems form here. This is where today approximately 99.13% of all water vapor is contained.
How could the atmosphere have contained more water before the flood?
1. Increased concentration at the stratosphere-mesosphere boundary where temperature inversions allow for the “warmest” yet super-cooled water to reside.
2. Larry Vardiman suggests that reducing the solar output would allow for increased cirrus cloud formation and water accumulation in the highest troposphere while increasing surface temperatures by preventing heat escape.
3. Isaiah 30:26 indicates that in the future the sun will be 7 times brighter (and hotter), and the moon will be equal to our current sun in its light/heat production. This may indicate that before the flood these same parameters prevailed. Decrease in heat would precipitate saturated water vapor by condensation.
4. Donald Patten proposes an extra-terrestrial source and trigger for initiating the canopy collapse: close encounter with earth of an ice laden comet approaching within the Roche limit of 2.44 earth radii

resulting in fragmentation and penetration of the upper water canopy by up to 12,000,000 cubic miles of ice particles at temperatures approaching absolute zero attracted paramagnetically and electrostatically to both magnetic poles. This has the added feature of contributing to the adiabatic heat loss from the canopy water condensation and precipitation producing the known “ice age” conditions which occurred following the flood as featured in the book of Job.

Job 6:16 “the ice wherein the snow is hid”
Job 37:10 “By the breath of God frost is given”
Job 38:22 “the treasures of the snow...the treasures of hail”
Job 38:29 “Out of whose womb came the ice and the hoary frost of heaven”
Job 38:30 “the face of the deep is frozen”

Patten’s astral catastrophism model is not new. Immanuel Velikovsky proposed this in 1950. Patten cites the rings of Saturn, composed of ice fragments, as evidence that prior cosmic catastrophes have occurred in our planetary system. A cometary visitor perhaps originating in the Oort Cloud on the fringes of our solar system would take a highly elliptical trajectory on its approach toward the Sun and cross earth’s orbit twice during its passage. Such an event, if the cause of the flood, would have been known and predictable, giving credence and validity to the 120 year advance warning delivered by God Who, unable to intervene because of man’s rebellious demands, would know well in advance the inevitable consequences and provide protection to those who would heed His warning.
Further confirmation of such an astrophysical mechanism are:
1. Gravitational tides from an approaching mass would assist in plate movements and mountain-building forces (orogenesis) and generate huge mass water displacements (tsunamis) that would create and distribute successive turbidite sedimentary deposits globally to produce “the geological column.”
2. Timing would have been sudden with a sinusoidal intensity profile.
3. The effect would have been global.
4. Sudden freezing of millions of mammoths on two continents and development of permafrost conditions that survive today.

“The dwellers on the plain of Shinar disbelieved God’s covenant that h e would not again bring a flood upon the earth. Many of them denied the existence of God, and attributed the flood to the operation of natural causes. Others believed in a supreme being, and that it was he who had destroyed the antediluvian world; and their hearts, like that of Cain, rose up in rebellion against him.” Patriarchs and Prophets p. 119

All three conclusions were wrong. There is a supreme being “upholding all things by the word of His power” Heb 1:3 who actively preserved “the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above” Genesis 1:7. But the supreme being wasn't the one who destroyed the antediluvian world. They destroyed themselves by their own choice.

Grace and peace be unto you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love. 2 John 3
